When Is the Best Time to Install Paint Protection Film?

The best time to install paint protection film is before your vehicle has a chance to accumulate rock chips and other road damage.

Many customers wait until they notice chips across the front bumper or hood before looking into protection. While we can certainly protect the vehicle from additional damage, we can't erase damage that's already there simply by installing the film.

The earlier protection is installed, the better the results usually are.

Highway Driving Takes a Toll

We work with many customers who spend a lot of time commuting throughout New Hampshire and into Boston.

Highway driving exposes your vehicle to constant impacts from rocks and debris kicked up by other vehicles.

Recently, we had a customer bring in a vehicle that was only one year old. Even though it was relatively new, it already had about 30,000 miles from highway driving, and the front end was covered in rock chips.

We installed paint protection film to stop additional damage from occurring, but the existing chips were still noticeable underneath the film.

The customer told us they wished they had protected the vehicle when it was new.

Paint Protection Film Is Designed for High-Impact Areas

Not every part of a vehicle experiences the same amount of wear.

The areas that usually take the most abuse include the front bumper, hood, fenders, and mirrors because they're constantly exposed to rocks and debris while driving.

One of our favorite examples involved a rare Morgan that came into our shop.

We installed paint protection film on the front of the vehicle. Just a couple of months later, the owner came back after a parking lot incident had damaged the front fender.

Fortunately, the damage was limited to the film.

We were able to remove the damaged film, install a new section, and the paint underneath looked exactly as it should.

Instead of searching for rare replacement parts or repairing the original paint, the film had done its job.

That's exactly what paint protection film is designed to do.

Waiting Can Become More Expensive

When rock chips continue to build over several years, there eventually comes a point where repainting becomes the only option for restoring the appearance.

That can cost significantly more than installing protection before the damage occurs.

While paint protection film can't reverse existing damage, it can prevent that damage from continuing to get worse.

For many vehicle owners, that makes installing protection sooner rather than later a worthwhile investment.

Every Vehicle Is Different

Not every customer needs full-body paint protection film.

Someone with a daily commuter may decide to protect only the front of the vehicle because that's where the majority of the damage occurs.

Someone with a collector vehicle or high-end vehicle may decide full coverage makes sense.

Other customers choose a combination of paint protection film on high-impact areas and ceramic coating on the rest of the vehicle.

The right solution depends on how the vehicle is driven, how long you plan to keep it, and what your priorities are.

New Vehicles Have the Biggest Advantage

When a vehicle is brand new, the paint is generally in its best possible condition.

That allows us to install paint protection film over a clean, undamaged surface.

Once rock chips, scratches, and other defects appear, additional work such as paint correction may be needed before protection is installed.

Starting with a clean foundation gives you the best long-term results.

Protect It Before You Need To Repair It

The customers who are happiest with their paint protection are usually the ones who installed it before they experienced significant damage.

Once rock chips happen, they're already part of the paint.

Installing paint protection film early helps preserve the finish you've already paid for and keeps everyday driving from creating more expensive problems down the road.
